Celebrity Pub Boom Sparks Village Exodus Over Parking Chaos
Residents in the picturesque village of Clanfield, located just 90 minutes from Birmingham in Oxfordshire, are contemplating a dramatic move away from their homes due to severe parking problems caused by an influx of celebrity visitors. The issue centers around two popular gastropubs—the Double Red Duke boutique hotel and restaurant and the neighboring Mason's Arms—which have become magnets for famous faces including Kate Moss and Jeremy Clarkson since their takeover in 2021.
Parking Deterioration and Traffic Chaos
Villagers describe the situation as "diabolical," with roads becoming "wall to wall cars" during peak times, particularly on weekends. Ann Roberts, a 67-year-old resident of 13 years, expressed frustration, stating, "They park all over, blocking our driveways. Every weekend, my neighbors are putting bollards out so they don't park outside the houses." This sentiment is echoed by an 87-year-old local who has lived in Clanfield since 1969, who reported encountering abusive behavior when confronting visitors about inconsiderate parking.
Victoria, a 36-year-old tech company manager who moved to the village last July, highlighted safety concerns, noting, "The other day I couldn't get out of my drive. People park on the war memorial. Weekends it just gets really dangerous with visitors coming in." She added that the bigger issue is potential blockages for emergency vehicles like fire engines, which could have serious consequences.
Impact on Community and Property Values
The parking chaos has not only disrupted daily life but also altered the village's atmosphere. A 50-year-old resident of ten years commented, "It's changed the atmosphere of the village. People parking disrespectfully isn't very nice." There are growing fears among locals that the ongoing issues could negatively impact property values, with one resident warning, "If you were to have your property on sale and if they were to view it on Mothering Sunday and all the busy weekends, they wouldn't even bother to try."
Chris Bridgewater, another local, shared his disappointment, saying, "We bought a bungalow and loved the village—we thought it would be our forever home. But we are now thinking of moving again—it's just got ridiculous." This sentiment is widespread, with many residents expressing a desire to relocate despite their initial attachment to the area.
Response from Authorities and Pub Owners
In response to the complaints, Oxfordshire County Council has dispatched enforcement officers to address the parking issues, following reports from Clanfield Parish Council. Giles Horton, chair of the parish council, mentioned that the pub operators are "trying to be as cooperative as they can be," adding, "They do try and ask their punters to park in the right sort of places, but people are people—they'll park wherever they can."
However, the pub proprietors, Country Creatures, have declined to comment on the situation, leaving residents feeling unsupported. Locals emphasize that they do not blame the businesses themselves but rather the lack of adequate parking infrastructure and enforcement. As one resident put it, "We want to work with the businesses because we don't feel they are doing anything wrong; it feels like it's our problem."
The ongoing parking crisis in Clanfield serves as a stark example of how rapid popularity and celebrity endorsements can strain small communities, forcing long-term residents to reconsider their futures in the village they once called home.
