Diesel Drivers Face New £88 Fuel Charges Amid Iran Conflict
Motorists driving diesel vehicles are being hit with new charges averaging £88 for a full tank, with warnings that these costs could increase further. The ongoing conflict in Iran, involving the United States and Israel, has entered its third week, creating significant pressure on fuel prices at the pumps.
Rising Costs and Expert Warnings
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, highlighted the severe impact on diesel drivers. "Drivers with diesel cars are really feeling the heat," he stated. "Prices have shot up 18p a litre in just two weeks, adding £10 to the cost of a full tank."
The average cost to fill a 55-litre family car with diesel has now reached £88, compared to £78 for petrol. Williams attributed this disparity to the UK's reliance on imports, noting that the country has fewer refineries than ever, and those operational are more geared towards petrol production than diesel.
Fuel Price Surge Details
Fuel prices have risen at their fastest rate since 2022, reaching their highest level in 18 months as of last Friday. This spike follows the initiation of airstrikes on Iran by the US and Israel nearly two weeks ago.
- Petrol prices have increased by an average of 7.8p to 140.6p per litre.
- Diesel prices have surged by 16.8p to 159.18p per litre.
The surge in global oil market prices is directly linked to the geopolitical tensions, exacerbating the financial strain on drivers.
Motorist Reactions and Concerns
Drivers have expressed frustration over the escalating costs. One M1 motorway driver shared, "We could have gone by train but it’s so expensive so I decided to drive. I’ve been keeping an eye on the petrol prices because you have to factor them in. It’s getting to the point where I won’t be doing so many away games like this."
Another driver, a lorry owner, added, "I own my lorry so I’m very conscious of the cost. The last two weeks have been a bit crazy. It’s definitely not good for business." These comments underscore the broader economic impact on both personal and commercial transport.
Broader Implications
The situation highlights the vulnerability of diesel users in the current fuel market, with potential for further price hikes if the conflict persists. Motorists are advised to monitor fuel costs closely and consider alternative travel options where feasible.
