Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, highlighted the severe impact on diesel drivers. "Drivers with diesel cars are really feeling the heat," he stated. "Prices have shot up 18p a litre in just two weeks, adding £10 to the cost of a full tank."
The average cost to fill a 55-litre family car with diesel has now reached £88, compared to £78 for petrol. Williams attributed this disparity to the UK's reliance on imports, noting that the country has fewer refineries than ever, and those operational are more geared towards petrol production than diesel.

Fuel prices have risen at their fastest rate since 2022, reaching their highest level in 18 months as of last Friday. This spike follows the initiation of airstrikes on Iran by the US and Israel nearly two weeks ago.

Another driver, a lorry owner, added, "I own my lorry so I’m very conscious of the cost. The last two weeks have been a bit crazy. It’s definitely not good for business." These comments underscore the broader economic impact on both personal and commercial transport.
