Drivers across the UK could soon see more 20mph speed limits under new nationwide proposals. Northern Ireland's Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has conducted a speed limit consultation from January to April 2026, seeking feedback from road users on expanding 20mph zones in built-up areas.
Consultation Aims to Improve Road Safety
The DfI stated that communities often feel "more comfortable and connected" when traffic moves at lower speeds. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins emphasized that road safety is a top priority. "It is clear from the evidence that excessive speed remains one of the most significant factors in collisions and fatalities on our roads," she said.
Kimmins added: "These are not just statistics; behind the numbers are families and communities who have been left heartbroken by often preventable tragedies. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone. I sincerely encourage you to read this review, share your thoughts, and join us in shaping a safer future for all."
Key Areas of the Consultation
The questionnaire covers three main areas: 20mph speed limits, national speed limits on single carriageway rural roads and dual carriageway roads, and speed limits for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). The DfI noted that "across the world deaths on the road remain unacceptably high. One life lost on our roads is one too many."
The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete, with all responses anonymous. Participants must be residents of Northern Ireland, and their answers will be used solely for research purposes. No personal information will be collected.
