UK Drivers Advised to Stay Calm as Middle East Conflict Fuels Petrol Price Fears
Drivers across the United Kingdom have been urged not to panic amid growing concerns that petrol and diesel prices could surge due to escalating conflicts in the Middle East. The situation involves tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran, which experts warn could impact global fuel markets.
Industry Leaders Call for Normal Buying Patterns
Gordon Balmer, the executive director of the Petrol Retailers Association, which represents sites selling approximately 65% of UK fuel, reported that Monday saw a significant increase in activity. Sales were up by 30%, indicating heightened consumer awareness.
However, Balmer emphasized that this does not constitute panic-buying. He stated, "This is not at the panic-buying stage and certainly not at a point where forecourts are running out of fuel. There’s plenty of fuel in the UK."
He further explained that recent data suggests some individuals are filling up their tanks in anticipation of potential pump price increases. Balmer advised, "We would ask people to continue to buy fuel in their normal buying pattern because any price increases will take time to filter through to the pump."
Current Fuel Prices Remain Lower Than Previous Year
Despite the fears, current forecourt prices are still lower than they were at this time last year. According to the latest RAC Fuel Watch data:
- Petrol: 132.86p per litre
- Diesel: 142.44p per litre
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, noted that wholesale fuel costs have been rising "gradually in recent weeks." He added, "We really shouldn’t see a shock jump in prices at the pumps … knowing the tendency for price increases to be passed on far more quickly than cuts, on behalf of drivers we urge retailers not to put up the price of fuel they’ve already got in forecourt tanks and reflect any increases in wholesale fuel fairly."
