Fuel Price Alert: Drivers Told to Fill Up on Monday or Tuesday for Best Value

Motorists across the UK are being advised to fill up their vehicles with petrol or diesel specifically on Mondays or Tuesdays to secure the lowest possible fuel prices. This strategic timing could lead to substantial savings on weekly fuel expenses, according to industry experts.

Expert Advice on Timing Fuel Purchases

Saul Turner, a specialist at National Scrap Car, has emphasized that "filling up early in the week" represents one of the most effective methods for reducing fuel costs. He specifically recommends that drivers top up their tanks on Monday or Tuesday "for the best value."

Turner explained the reasoning behind this advice: "When it comes to saving money on fuel, the advice is simple: fill up early in the week. We typically see prices rise towards the weekend, with Friday and Saturday being the most expensive days due to increased leisure travel."

Utilizing Technology for Price Comparison

The expert further highlighted how modern technology can assist drivers in finding the best deals. "The new price change data is fed directly into apps and navigation systems that motorists already rely on, such as PetrolPrices, Waze, My RAC, and the AA app," Turner noted.

He recommends taking just thirty seconds to check preferred comparison tools before embarking on journeys and refueling. This simple step can help identify the most cost-effective fueling options in any given area.

Understanding Premium Fuel Options

The RAC has provided additional guidance regarding premium fuel choices. While retailers often promote "premium" fuels claiming performance and economy advantages along with engine cleaning and protection benefits, the reality may differ for most drivers.

According to the RAC: "In reality, unless you're driving a performance vehicle with a highly tuned engine, you're unlikely to see significant improvements by using fuel with a higher octane (petrol) or cetane (diesel) rating. You will, however, pay 10 to 20p a litre more for the privilege."

Research on Premium Fuel Usage

Supporting this perspective, research conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA) revealed that drivers in the United States were wasting more than $2.1 billion by using premium-grade petrol and diesel in vehicles designed to run on standard fuels.

The RAC suggests that drivers curious about premium fuels should "experiment with two or three tanks of premium fuel" to determine if they notice "a significant increase in the number of miles you can squeeze out of a tank" along with improvements in engine performance.

Practical Fuel-Saving Strategies

Understanding what type of fuel works best for your specific vehicle remains crucial when attempting to reduce motoring expenses. Combining this knowledge with strategic refueling timing and regular price checks can lead to meaningful savings over time.

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about local fuel prices through resources like RAC Fuel Watch while implementing these practical tips to optimize their fuel expenditure throughout the year.
