DVLA Issues Critical Alert to Drivers Over Misplaced Driving Licences
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued an urgent warning to millions of drivers across the UK, advising them not to panic if they have misplaced their driving licence. The agency emphasised the importance of double-checking all essential items, including the driving licence, before setting off on any journey.
Replacement Process Made Simple
In a recent social media post, the DVLA reassured motorists that ordering a replacement licence is both quick and straightforward. The agency stated, "Don’t panic, it’s quick and easy to order a replacement." The cost for a replacement driving licence is set at £20, and payments can be made using MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta debit or credit cards.
Motorists have the option to replace either a full driving licence or a provisional driving licence through the online system. To be eligible for this service, applicants must be residents of Great Britain, as a different service operates in Northern Ireland. Additionally, individuals must not be disqualified from driving for any reason.
Essential Information Required
When applying for a replacement, drivers will need to provide specific details to facilitate the process. This includes addresses where they have lived over the past three years. If available, applicants should also provide their driving licence number, National Insurance number, and passport number.
For those whose driving licence is due to expire within two years, there is an opportunity to update the photo as part of the replacement process. Drivers can choose to keep their current photo or use their passport photo, provided the licence is expiring within the two-year timeframe. However, using a passport photo requires a valid UK passport and permission for the DVLA to access the passport image.
Important Additional Guidelines
If the DVLA determines that a new photo is necessary, applicants will receive instructions on how to submit one. It is important to note that drivers do not need the old paper counterpart of their licence to apply for a replacement.
In cases where a driving licence has been stolen, motorists are strongly advised to report the theft to the police before proceeding with the replacement application. Once an application has been successfully submitted, the DVLA will send a confirmation email to the applicant.
Applicants may also receive invitations to participate in research via email, though they have the option to opt out of such communications. This comprehensive guidance aims to ensure that drivers can quickly and efficiently address the issue of a misplaced driving licence without unnecessary stress.
