FCDO Updates Jamaica Travel Advice After Assault Reports

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for the Caribbean, issuing a warning for UK tourists heading to Jamaica. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has shared new information regarding incidents of sexual assault in tourist areas and provided guidance on personal safety measures.

Incidents in Tourist Areas

In an update directed at UK holidaymakers travelling outside the European Union to the Caribbean, the FCDO stated: "Some British nationals have reported incidents of rape and sexual assault in tourist areas." This includes beach resorts, the FCDO warned. It added: "In many cases, the alleged perpetrator was someone the victim met socially, for example at a bar, hotel, beach or excursion."

Safety Recommendations

Although the FCDO noted that such incidents are infrequent, it emphasized that "simple habits such as increased awareness and extra precaution can greatly reduce risk." UK tourists are urged to avoid isolated areas, particularly at night, and to only use reputable, licensed providers for services and excursions, including taxis. The FCDO advises travellers to carry out their own research and consult resort staff or their tour operator.

Tourists are also warned not to disclose personal information, accommodation or room numbers, or social media accounts to new acquaintances. For those travelling solo, it is recommended to tell someone you trust—at home or at the hotel—where you will be and to always ensure transport arrangements are in place to return to your hotel independently.

Reporting Incidents

If you experience sexual harassment or assault, or if you feel threatened or unsafe, the FCDO advises reporting it as soon as possible to hotel staff or your tour operator. Further assistance is available from the British High Commission in Kingston at +1 (876) 936 0700. Alternatively, the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), a dedicated police service providing safe and confidential investigative and emotional support to victims, can be contacted at +1 (876) 926 4079 or via email at cisoca@jcf.gov.jm.

The FCDO also recommends referring to the advice for women travelling abroad and the FCDO information page for victims of rape and sexual assault for further information.
