Drivers in the North West of England are facing stricter road enforcement as Greater Manchester Police (GMP) expands its fleet of speed camera vans to five vehicles, targeting a common driving offence. The force has introduced two new specialist speed enforcement vans, increasing the total from three to five, allowing officers to monitor more speeding hotspots across all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester.
Funding and Partnership
The new vans are funded by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) through the Greater Manchester Road Safety Partnership, supporting the region's Vision Zero strategy. This initiative, backed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Mayor, aims to eliminate all road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040.
Officer Comments
Michael Hewitt, Camera Enforcement Team Leader, stated: "These additional vehicles represent a significant enhancement to our operational capacity. Increasing our fleet to five dedicated enforcement vehicles means we can be present in more locations, more often, targeting those areas where speeding presents the greatest danger to our communities. Visible enforcement remains a key part of changing driver behaviours and supporting Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero objectives."
Through continued partnership with TfGM and the Greater Manchester Road Safety Partnership, GMP remains committed to using enforcement, education, and engagement to reduce road danger, change driver behaviour, and keep communities safe.
TfGM Perspective
Peter Boulton, TfGM’s Network Director for Highways, added: "Speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal and life-changing injuries across the UK, and the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. In Greater Manchester we want to reduce all road casualties to zero by 2040 as part of our Vision Zero approach. These new speed enforcement vehicles will provide a visible deterrent to discourage dangerous driving behaviour, supporting GMP’s crucial role in helping us realise our Vision Zero ambition."
