Government Launches Fuel Finder to Help Drivers Cut Petrol and Diesel Costs
The Labour Party government has introduced a new digital tool designed to help motorists reduce their fuel expenses by an estimated £40 annually. The Fuel Finder service provides drivers with real-time information on petrol and diesel prices at local stations, enabling them to make more informed decisions about where to fill up their vehicles.
How the Fuel Finder Service Works
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) developed the platform to increase transparency in fuel pricing and encourage competition among retailers. By accessing the service through various apps and websites, drivers can quickly identify which stations offer the most affordable fuel in their immediate area with just a few taps on their devices.
"Drivers should not have to guess whether they are being overcharged," stated a DESNZ spokesperson. "Fuel Finder makes it easier to see which stations are cheapest locally and take business away from the priciest pumps."
Official Statements on the Initiative
Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized the government's commitment to supporting household finances through this initiative. "My priority is protecting family finances and standing up for drivers," she said. "Fuel Finder puts power back into their hands by giving them the information they need to see where fuel is cheapest locally."
The government estimates that widespread use of the tool could save car-owning households approximately £40 per year by helping them avoid overpriced fuel stations. Officials encourage drivers to continue their normal refueling routines while utilizing the service to identify the best available deals.
Industry Support for Price Transparency
Andrew Hooks, General Manager at DriveScore, welcomed the initiative, noting that his company has launched its own version of the service. "Fuel costs remain one of the biggest everyday pressures for UK drivers," he explained. "People deserve simple, transparent ways to save. That's why we launched DriveScore Fuel Finder - to help drivers quickly locate the best prices nearby."
Hooks added that during a period of financial strain for many households, "giving people smarter tools to manage their driving costs has never been more important."
The Fuel Finder service became available at the beginning of 2026 and continues to expand across multiple digital platforms. Government officials believe that increased price transparency will foster greater competition among fuel retailers, ultimately helping to keep costs down for consumers nationwide.
