Indefinite Travel Warning for UK Tourists in Bolivia from May 6

The Foreign Office has issued an indefinite warning for UK tourists visiting a holiday hotspot from May 6. The FCDO has changed its travel advice for a South America destination.

The FCDO has updated its Bolivia advice, with new information about the announcement of an indefinite transport strike from 6 May 2026.

The Foreign Office said: 'The interprovincial transport union of La Paz has announced an indefinite strike today, 6 May 2026. The roads to the Peruvian border may be blockaded. There are also blockades near the town of Caranavi, and due to social unrest blockades may appear on other roads without warning.'

'If a bus company sells you a ticket condicionado it means they will not guarantee arrival to your destination,' Foreign Office officials added. 'Check local advice before travelling and do not cross blockades.'

Earlier this week, the Bolivian Workers' Center union issued its strike call, at a rally attended by more than 1,000 people in the satellite city of El Alto near the capital La Paz.

'Starting today, a general, indefinite and active strike is declared, until the government understands the people's demands,' COB's secretary general Mario Argollo told the crowd.

Those demands include a 20 per cent increase to the minimum wage, the repeal of a tax reform affecting small traders, pension increases and salary cuts for high-ranking officials.

President Rodrigo Paz has criticised union leaders for requesting a wage increase, pointing to the government's decision to raise the minimum wage by 20 per cent in January.

'If you want to raise salaries, first create jobs,' Paz told an event in the central city of Cochabamba.

The strike announcement follows demonstrations by transport workers, teachers, miners, doctors and Indigenous groups during the week.

Public workers blocked the streets of El Alto, Bolivia with buses, cars, and trucks during a national transportation strike. Union leaders are demanding the government guarantee clean fuel, end long lines at petrol stations, repair roads, and compensate drivers for repeated engine repairs.
