Lorry overturns on Small Heath roundabout

Emergency services rushed to a Birmingham roundabout this afternoon after a lorry overturned, blocking the island and causing major travel disruption.

Emergency Response at the Scene

The incident occurred at Heybarnes Circus in Small Heath, near the junction of Coventry Road and Small Heath Highway, at approximately 12:35pm on November 12.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they were called by police to reports of an overturned lorry outside the local Asda branch. An ambulance and two paramedic officers attended the scene.

A spokesperson stated: "The driver, a man, sustained injuries not thought to be serious and was taken to Heartlands Hospital for further checks." He was transported by land ambulance.

Major Traffic Disruption

The overturned lorry caused significant blockage on the key route. West Midlands Roads issued a warning on social media platform X, stating that traffic was unable to circulate the entire island.

The vehicle was blocking the section between the Small Heath Highway entry and exit points. Drivers were urged to avoid the A45 Coventry Road at Heybarnes Circus and to expect long delays.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported the A45 Small Heath Highway was partially blocked with queuing traffic due to the overturned lorry around the roundabout.

Ongoing Cleanup and Investigation

Alongside paramedics, police and firefighters were also called to the incident to manage the scene and begin recovery operations.

The roundabout remained blocked for several hours following the crash as authorities worked to clear the overturned vehicle and investigate the cause of the incident.

Local commuters faced extensive travel delays during the afternoon, with authorities advising drivers to plan ahead and seek alternative routes.
