The M5 southbound motorway is currently closed between junctions 3 and 4 near Birmingham after a serious fire broke out off the network and spread to the embankment, triggering major disruption for drivers. National Highways has confirmed that all traffic is being temporarily held while emergency services work at the scene, with no estimate yet for when the road will reopen.
Off-network fire spreads to embankment
The blaze initially started off the motorway before spreading to the vegetation and embankment alongside the southbound carriageway. Fire crews from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service are currently on site battling the flames, according to a spokesperson for National Highways.
“The M5 southbound is now closed between J3 (Quinton) and J4 due to an off-network fire which has spread to the embankment,” the spokesperson said. “Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service are on the scene. There is no estimate for reopening. Delays are building. Please plan ahead.”
Traffic held between Quinton and Bromsgrove
The closure affects the stretch of the M5 between J3, where it meets the Quinton Expressway near Halesowen and Birmingham, and J4 at Sandy Lane serving Bromsgrove and Stourbridge. Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports that all traffic is being temporarily held and is stationary due to the serious fire.
West Midlands Roads also issued an alert on social media, urging motorists to expect delays on approach. “M5 southbound between J3 (Halesowen) and J4 (Bromsgrove). Carriageway blocked due to a fire. Delays on approach. Plan your journey ahead,” the post read.
Major route disruption
The M5 is one of the busiest motorways in the West Midlands, providing a key link between Birmingham, the South West, and Wales. The southbound carriageway is a major commuter and freight route, and the closure is likely to cause significant knock-on delays on surrounding roads, including the A456 and A491, as drivers seek alternative routes.
National Highways has not provided a timeframe for the road to reopen, and the situation remains fluid. Emergency services are working to bring the fire under control and assess the damage to the embankment. The closure is expected to remain in place for some time, and drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area unless absolutely necessary.
