The United Kingdom is preparing for a significant warm spell as the Met Office forecasts that 27 areas across the nation will experience temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius on Friday, making them warmer than parts of Greece. This anticipated heatwave extends from Liverpool in the north to Bude in the south, with the warm conditions expected to persist into the weekend.
Wildfire Warnings Issued
In Glasgow, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has raised alarms over a "very high" risk of wildfires as temperatures are set to reach 20C today, surpassing the 19C forecast for Athens. Over the weekend, the mercury in Glasgow could climb to 21C. The fire service has escalated the risk level to "extreme" across western regions, warning that such conditions can lead to rapidly spreading fires causing extensive damage.
Detailed Forecast
The Met Office has identified 26 additional locations expected to hit 20C on Friday, spanning from Liverpool in the north to Bude in the south. Their Friday forecast states: "Any mist, fog and low cloud in the east will clear quickly after sunrise. Another bright and sunny day is then expected with temperatures slightly higher than on Thursday. Generally less windy, helping the warmer feel of the day."
Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates noted that high pressure would "remain broadly in charge" throughout the weekend, ensuring "most places will remain dry with a fair amount of sunshine." He added: "As is often the case, there are a few exceptions, with cloudier conditions for some at times and patchy rain possible for northern Scotland later in the weekend. But in the sunshine, we're expecting temperatures to steadily climb, likely peaking in the low 20s on Friday and over the weekend. Onshore breezes will keep some coastal areas somewhat cooler."
