Motorhome and Campervan Demand Soars 133% as Drivers Defy Parking Restrictions
Demand for campervans, motorhomes, and caravans has surged by an impressive 133 percent since the beginning of the year, according to recent data from Gumtree. This remarkable increase significantly outpaces the broader vehicle market, where overall interest has risen by a more modest 33 percent.
Spring Buying Season Gains Momentum
The data indicates that road users are actively planning for road-trip adventures and staycation getaways as temperatures gradually begin to rise. Louis Maxwell, a motoring expert at Gumtree, highlighted this trend, noting that the first weekend in March recorded the highest level of campervan and motorhome demand on the platform since September.
"This suggests the spring buying season is already gathering momentum," Maxwell explained. "With availability currently strong, buyers are encouraged to begin their search early before competition intensifies as spring progresses."
Listings Increase as Sellers Prepare for Busy Travel Season
In addition to rising demand, listings for these vehicles have also seen a notable uptick, increasing by 22 percent since January. Sellers are bringing more vehicles to market in anticipation of the busier travel season ahead.
Among the most sought-after models are classic favourites that promise flexible, on-the-road adventures:
- Volkswagen Transporter: This model has racked up more than 74,000 views, making it a top choice for enthusiasts.
- Ford Transit: A reliable option that continues to attract significant interest.
- Fiat Ducato: Another popular model among those dreaming of mobile adventures.
Potential Overnight Parking Bans in Coastal Resorts
This surge in demand comes at a time when campervans could soon face overnight parking bans in one of the UK's most popular coastal resorts. Cornwall Council is currently considering proposals to ban motorhomes from parking in car parks between 11pm and 8am.
The move is designed to reduce congestion, particularly during busy holiday periods. Dan Rogerson, Cornwall Council cabinet member for transport, emphasized the council's approach: "We're considering a range of proposals to address requests from motorhome users, as well as safeguarding access to some of our public spaces and supporting traffic management."
Council Encourages Public Consultation
Rogerson also acknowledged the potential impact on residents who may rely on free car parks for overnight parking due to limited options near their homes. "I particularly encourage those residents to take part in the consultation so that we can understand the impact," he stated.
The council is actively seeking feedback from residents, businesses, and visitors on these proposals, which are still in the consideration stage. Rogerson reiterated: "These are proposals at this stage and I very much encourage residents to take part in the consultation."
Despite these potential restrictions, the data clearly shows that enthusiasm for motorhomes and campervans remains undiminished, with many drivers eagerly planning their next adventures on the road.
