Owners of older cars may face increased charges worth hundreds of pounds. It applies to households who own cars made before 2017. But there isn't a blanket charge for these vehicles registered between 2001 and 2017.
How charges are calculated
It depends on their emissions levels and how polluting they are. Some cars will have annual tax charges as little as £20, while other motorists may have to fork out a whopping £790. So some motorists may see their tax bills soar once their vehicle reaches a certain age. Bands range from A to M. The Band I charge is £360.
Recent changes
Tax rates recently went up at the start of April. Vehicle tax can start to get very expensive once a car is more than nine years old with a reg plate before 2017, so it's worth bearing this in mind.
Comparison with newer cars
The standard rate for most cars made after 2017 is now £200. So owners of older cars may find themselves paying more or less, depending on their motor's emissions levels.
Electric vehicles affected
Households with electric vehicles also now have to pay vehicle tax following recent rule changes. They had previously been exempt from paying the charge before last year.
