UK Drivers Warned Petrol Could Average £2 per Litre by May Amid Iran War

Drivers across the United Kingdom have been issued a stark warning that petrol prices could surge to an average of £2 per litre by May if the ongoing conflict in Iran continues to escalate. This alarming forecast comes as fuel costs are already skyrocketing, placing significant financial strain on motorists and households nationwide.

Current Fuel Price Surge

According to the latest data released today, petrol has now reached 148.78p per litre on average in the UK. This marks the highest level since May 2024 and represents a dramatic increase of over 12% since the war began just a month ago. In some areas, drivers have even reported seeing prices exceeding £2 per litre at certain pumps, highlighting the severe volatility in the market.

Diesel prices are also hitting record highs, currently averaging 176.52p per litre. This is the most expensive diesel has been since December 2022, further compounding the cost-of-living crisis for many consumers who rely on their vehicles for daily commutes and essential travel.

Global Impact and Political Pressures

The ripple effects of the Iran war are being felt globally, with the United States experiencing a sharp rise in petrol prices as well. Average costs at the pump have jumped by a third, from $3 to $4 per gallon. This surge could create political pressure for US President Donald Trump ahead of the mid-term elections scheduled for November, as voters grapple with increased expenses.

The conflict shows no signs of abating, with President Trump issuing new threats to "obliterate" Iran's power plants and oil wells if a deal is not reached "shortly." However, Iran's foreign ministry has denied any negotiations with the US to end the war, suggesting that tensions may persist or even intensify in the coming weeks.

Expert Analysis and Predictions

Samuel Mather-Holgate, Managing Director and Independent Financial Advisor at Swindon-based Mather and Murray Financial, provided insights to Newspage. He stated that he expects to see petrol prices reach £2 per litre in a matter of weeks if the Iran war escalates further.

"The war in Iran continues to affect the UK consumer, as petrol prices keep going higher," Mather-Holgate explained. "Average prices will hit £2 a litre by May if there is further escalation in the region, which is a real possibility given the track record of Trump."

He also noted a potential silver lining, adding: "Given that same consideration, if Donald Trump declares he's won and pulls out of the region then the price of oil could retreat as well, meaning petrol prices could be back to normal by the summer."

This expert commentary underscores the precarious nature of the current situation, where geopolitical events are directly impacting everyday costs for British drivers. As the conflict unfolds, motorists are advised to stay informed and prepare for possible further increases in fuel expenses.
