Police warn of M6 slow drivers: £100 fines for middle-lane hogging
Police warn of M6 slow drivers and £100 fines

Police have issued a crucial safety warning to motorists about the dangers of driving too slowly on motorways, highlighting that the problem extends beyond just speeding offences.

The hidden danger of slow driving

While most drivers understand the risks of excessive speed, Warwickshire Police report increasing concerns about vehicles moving at dangerously slow speeds. The situation becomes particularly hazardous when drivers occupy the middle lane while travelling well below the speed limit, creating unnecessary obstacles for other road users.

Warwickshire Police recently shared details of a concerning incident on Facebook where officers from A Unit OPU intercepted a motorist on the M6 Northbound. The driver was travelling between 55-60mph in the middle lane despite lane one being completely clear of slower traffic or obstructions.

Consequences for inconsiderate driving

Officers removed the driver from the motorway and issued a ticket for driving without reasonable consideration for other road users. The motorist will likely be required to attend a driver improvement course, for which they must pay themselves.

In their social media statement, Warwickshire Police explained: "Other road users will assume that by being in an overtaking lane, vehicles will be doing the speed limit and will approach accordingly, having to unnecessarily use lanes to the right to overtake."

The force emphasised that while the speed limit represents a maximum rather than a target or minimum requirement, maintaining significantly lower speeds in overtaking lanes when inner lanes are clear constitutes poor driving standards.

Staying safe and legal on motorways

Police are observing more drivers behaving in this manner, seemingly unaware of the hazards they create. To avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads, motorists should remember these key points:

  • Keep left unless overtaking or avoiding hazards
  • Middle-lane hogging can result in a £100 fine and up to 3 penalty points
  • Driving too slowly in overtaking lanes forces dangerous manoeuvres from other vehicles

The warning comes as motorways prepare for increased traffic during the upcoming Easter break, making considerate driving more important than ever for everyone's safety.
