RAC Issues Urgent Warning Over 'Dangerous' Road Sign Confusion
The RAC has issued a stark warning to drivers across the UK, highlighting a potentially dangerous mistake being made on the roads. Motorists are being urged to ensure they clearly understand the difference between two specific triangular road signs, as confusion between them could lead to serious safety risks.
The Confusing Signs Explained
The warning focuses on two triangular signs that are frequently confused due to their visual similarity. The first sign depicts two black vertical lines that move closer together but remain separate. This indicates that the road narrows on both sides, meaning drivers should expect less space as the carriageway tightens.
The second sign shows two carriageways coming together. This signifies that a dual carriageway is ending, and traffic will continue as two-way traffic on a single carriageway. The RAC emphasized the critical distinction, stating: “This ‘bottleneck’ sign looks very similar to the ‘dual carriageway ends’ sign, except for one key difference; the vertical lines remain separate despite coming closer together.”
The organization advises drivers to pay special attention to nearby road markings, as the width of lanes will begin to change in these situations, providing additional contextual clues.
Broader Context: Fading Road Markings
This warning comes alongside findings from an RAC investigation which revealed that painted road markings across the United Kingdom are increasingly "vanishing" due to wear and tear. The conclusion of this investigation was described as "pretty concerning", with a majority of drivers reporting that faded markings make driving more dangerous.
In a video shared on Instagram, a RAC spokesperson highlighted the issue, asking: "Have you noticed it's harder to see where you're supposed to be on the road?" They further explained: "We're not just talking about cosmetic wear and tear, but the vital road markings that drivers rely on every single day, fading away."
These essential markings include centre lines that separate oncoming traffic, arrows that guide vehicles through roundabouts, and stop lines that ensure safety at junctions. The combination of confusing signs and deteriorating road markings creates a compounded risk for all road users.
The RAC's dual message is clear: drivers must refresh their knowledge of road signage, particularly these easily confused triangular warnings, while also remaining extra vigilant due to the declining state of road surface markings nationwide. This proactive awareness is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring safer journeys for everyone.
