Emergency services descended on a major Staffordshire route this afternoon following a serious collision that left two drivers with significant injuries.
The incident occurred on the A449 in Wombourne, prompting a multi-agency response from police, ambulance crews, and fire services. Both vehicles sustained substantial damage in the impact, requiring extensive efforts to free the occupants.
Emergency Response and Road Closure
Staffordshire Police confirmed they were called to the scene at approximately 2:15 PM, with the A449 subsequently closed in both directions between the Bridgnorth Road junction and the Wombourne bypass.
West Midlands Ambulance Service deployed multiple resources to the incident, including two ambulances, a paramedic officer, and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford. A MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic also attended the scene.
Condition of Those Involved
Both drivers, the sole occupants of their respective vehicles, received emergency treatment at the scene before being transported to major trauma centres for further care.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson detailed: "Both drivers, adult males, were treated for serious injuries at the scene. One man was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham via land ambulance, while the second was transported to the same major trauma centre via air ambulance."

Staffordshire Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and are urging any witnesses to come forward.
"We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to it," a police spokesperson stated.
The road remained closed for several hours while collision investigators examined the scene and recovery operations took place, causing significant disruption to evening commuters.
