Survey Reveals Majority of Drivers Oppose 20mph Speed Limits on Key Roads
A recent survey conducted by Quotezone.co.uk has found that over 60% of drivers in the UK are against lowering the speed limit on key 30mph roads to 20mph. The data, collected from 1,000 UK adults in February 2026, shows that 66% of participants oppose the change, with 67% believing that 20mph roads are too slow for practical driving.
Government Road Safety Strategy and Public Sentiment
This survey comes in the wake of the Labour Party Government's new road safety strategy, introduced in January, which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain's roads by 65% by 2035. While the government pushes for safer roads, the survey highlights a significant disconnect between policy goals and driver preferences.
Greg Wilson, car insurance expert and CEO at Quotezone.co.uk, commented on the findings. "With changes to speed limits continuing to be discussed across the UK, our research suggests many motorists remain unconvinced about reducing key 30mph roads to 20mph, with concerns likely centred around journey times and practicality," he said.
Evidence from Wales and Safety Outcomes
Wales has already implemented a default 20mph rule on residential and built-up roads, with England and Scotland considering similar measures. Data from the first year of implementation in Wales shows fewer people killed or seriously injured, indicating positive safety impacts.
"That being said, evidence from Wales, for example, demonstrates that lower limits can have a positive impact on road safety," Wilson added. "Ultimately, decisions around speed limits sit with local authorities, and they must balance public sentiment with safety outcomes, congestion and the needs of different road users when assessing what's appropriate for their communities."
Insurance Implications and Driver Advice
From an insurance perspective, measures that reduce collisions are beneficial. "Any measure that successfully reduces collisions is positive news for premium prices. Fewer accidents could lead to fewer claims and over time that has the potential to ease the pressure on car insurance costs," Wilson explained.
As lower speed limits become more common, drivers are advised to watch for signage and adjust their speed to avoid fines and ensure safety. The survey, which has a margin of error of roughly 5% at a 95% confidence level, underscores the ongoing debate between road safety initiatives and driver convenience in the UK.
