Major UK Car Recall: 44,000 Vehicles Over Engine Fire Risk
Motorists across the United Kingdom are being urgently warned about a significant vehicle recall affecting tens of thousands of cars. Stellantis, the automotive giant, has issued a voluntary recall for 44,000 vehicles in the UK due to a serious safety concern that could potentially lead to engine fires.
Safety Issue Details
A spokesperson for Stellantis explained the critical nature of the defect. "Having customer safety and satisfaction at the core of its values, Stellantis is voluntarily recalling 44,000 vehicles in the UK due to a potential issue concerning the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter (GPF) pipe and the belt starter generator (BSG)," the company stated.
The problem specifically involves certain 2023-2026 model year vehicles from popular brands including Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, and Fiat. These vehicles may have been assembled with insufficient clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the pole protection cup of the 48V Belt Starter Generator.
Potential Fire Hazard
Under specific conditions, this manufacturing defect could have dangerous consequences. "Under wet conditions, there is a possibility that this insufficient clearance and a possible contact between these components may lead to water infiltration creating electrical arch, which could trigger a thermal event, such as overheating," the Stellantis spokesperson detailed.
The company further warned that "in the worst-case scenario, this could result in a potential risk of fire in the engine compartment." This serious safety risk has prompted the immediate recall action affecting vehicles equipped with the 1.2-litre mild hybrid powertrain system.
Affected Vehicle Models
The recall specifically impacts ten popular car models across multiple brands. Owners of the following vehicles should be particularly vigilant:
- 1,694 Citroën C3 vehicles
- 2,391 Citroën C3 Aircross models
- 937 Citroën C4 cars
- 218 Citroën C4 X vehicles
- 132 DS 3 Crossback units
- 13,345 Peugeot 208 cars
- 5,771 Peugeot 2008 models
- 1,888 Vauxhall Corsa vehicles
- 2,057 Vauxhall Frontera cars
- 534 Vauxhall Mokka models
While Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep were initially reported as potentially affected brands in wider recall discussions, they do not appear in the current official list of impacted vehicles for this specific safety action.
Resolution and Company Response
Stellantis has committed to addressing this safety concern promptly and transparently. The automotive manufacturer is offering a completely free service to resolve the clearance issue, with the repair expected to take approximately 30 minutes per vehicle.
The company emphasized its commitment to customer safety, stating they remain "fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly in addressing this issue." Affected drivers will be contacted directly by Stellantis regarding the necessary repairs for their vehicles.
This mass recall represents one of the most significant vehicle safety actions in recent UK automotive history, affecting popular models from multiple mainstream brands. Motorists who own any of the listed vehicles should await official communication from Stellantis and schedule the free repair as soon as possible to ensure their vehicle's safety.
