Drivers in the West Midlands face a postcode lottery when it comes to speeding enforcement, with new data revealing that Warwickshire is the region's hotspot for fines. Despite having a much smaller population than neighbouring West Midlands, Warwickshire police issued a staggering 177,373 speeding offences between 2024 and 2025, according to data from road safety technology firm Ooono. This placed the county third in the entire country for speeding tickets, ahead of the West Midlands force, which recorded 147,070 offences.
Uneven Enforcement Across the Region
The disparity suggests that speeding drivers in Birmingham and the Black Country are more likely to escape punishment. Some police forces are stricter on enforcement, deploying more speed cameras on their roads. In response, police and council chiefs are rolling out new speed cameras in Birmingham and reducing speed limits on major roads to address the issue.
National Rise in Speeding Offences
Nationally, speeding tickets have reached a four-year high. Of the 24 police forces that responded to Ooono's request, 22 reported an increase in speeding between 2024 and 2025. Mike Skyte, a spokesperson for Ooono, commented: "Speeding enforcement is clearly on the rise, and many drivers may not realise just how costly certain roads have become. Our data shows that it's not just motorways – everyday routes across towns and cities are becoming high-risk for fines. In London especially, the rapid expansion of 20mph zones is playing a major role in the increase. Many drivers simply haven't adjusted yet."
Local Actions to Improve Safety
Authorities are taking steps to level the playing field. Warwickshire's high enforcement rate may serve as a model for other areas, but the focus remains on reducing speeding overall. Drivers are urged to be vigilant, as the likelihood of receiving a fine varies significantly depending on location.
