M42 North Bridge at Junction 6 Closed Due to Corrosion and Concrete Damage
M42 Bridge Closed Over Structural Concerns

Motorway inspectors have closed the north bridge at Junction 6 of the M42, Bickenhill Interchange, after discovering 'corrosion' and 'damage to concrete' during a routine inspection. The closure, which took effect at 4pm on July 13, 2026, affects a key route for drivers heading to Birmingham Airport and the National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

Structural Concerns Prompt Immediate Closure

National Highways announced that the routine inspection uncovered damage to the concrete and corrosion of the steel reinforcement. Initially, one lane was closed and a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes was imposed, but repeated breaches of the restriction led to the full closure. The bridge, which opened in 1976, is now closed to all traffic with no estimated reopening date.

Impact on Travel to Airport and NEC

Junction 6 is a critical junction for accessing Birmingham Airport and the NEC. National Highways has advised drivers to allow extra time for journeys and to seek alternative routes. The closure is expected to cause significant disruption, particularly during peak travel times.

Safety Priority and Next Steps

A National Highways spokesperson said: 'Safety has to be our priority, which is why we have taken the decision to close the structure now. This is a developing situation and we are working with structural engineering experts and consultants to understand the results of inspections and surveys and consider what our options are. We will provide further updates as soon as we are able to do so.'

Inspection Regime

National Highways stated that all structures are subject to rigorous inspections under the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB). A general inspection is undertaken every two years, and a more detailed principal inspection every six years. The bridge had been inspected as per these standards, but the latest survey revealed the structural issues that led to the closure.
