A football fan from the Black Country has been reliving the trip of a lifetime to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, exactly 40 years after England's infamous 'Hand of God' defeat by Argentina.
A Journey to Remember
Dave Williams, from Walsall, was just 24 when he travelled to Mexico to watch England play in the tournament. He recalls the incredible atmosphere and the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing some of the world's greatest players in action.
The 1986 World Cup is forever etched in football history for Diego Maradona's controversial 'Hand of God' goal, which helped Argentina eliminate England in the quarter-finals. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Williams looks back on the trip with fondness.
The Hand of God Match
Williams was in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 22, 1986, when Maradona punched the ball into the net past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The goal stood, and Argentina went on to win 2-1, with Maradona also scoring a stunning solo effort later in the match.
"It was gutting to lose like that, but being there was incredible," Williams said. "The atmosphere was electric, and even though we lost, it's a memory I'll never forget."
A Trip of a Lifetime
Williams saved up for months to afford the trip, which cost around £1,000 at the time – a significant sum for a young factory worker. He travelled with a group of friends and spent three weeks in Mexico, taking in several matches and soaking up the local culture.
"We went to a few group games before the quarter-final," he recalled. "The whole experience was amazing. The Mexican fans were so welcoming, and the stadiums were packed. It was the trip of a lifetime."
Reflecting on 40 Years
Now 64, Williams has been looking back at photos and memorabilia from the trip. He says it feels like yesterday, yet also a lifetime ago. "Time flies," he said. "It's hard to believe it's been 40 years. I'm glad I have the memories and the souvenirs to remind me of that special time."
Williams still follows England and attends matches when he can. He hopes to see the national team win a major tournament in his lifetime. "It would be the perfect ending to my football story," he added.
