Sainsbury's Switches to White Eggs; Morrisons and Waitrose Stick with Brown
Sainsbury's Switches to White Eggs; Rivals Stick with Brown

Sainsbury's has announced it will stop selling brown eggs in favour of white eggs as part of its environmental drive. The supermarket chain stated that the move would "result in lower emissions and better welfare outcomes for the hens that lay them" as it pursues net zero ambitions by 2035.

Competitors Stand Firm

However, both Morrisons and Waitrose have pledged to continue offering brown eggs. A Waitrose spokesman said the retailer could "achieve high welfare and reduce our environmental impact at the same time", confirming that branches in Birmingham and Solihull will keep selling brown eggs. Morrisons also made the same commitment.

Industry Reaction

Will Lea, vice-chair of the National Farmers' Union's poultry board, commented: "It will be interesting to see what opportunities this presents for the poultry sector in years to come."

Shopper Backlash

The decision has sparked strong reactions on social media. One shopper wrote: "At least some supermarkets are not giving in to this net zero nonsense. Brown eggs every time." Many customers threatened to switch supermarkets. Another said: "I think that there's a definite difference in taste between brown eggs and white. I will only buy brown eggs, so that's me changing supermarkets."
