£220 Broadband Discount for DWP Benefit Claimants: Full Eligibility
£220 Broadband Discount for DWP Benefit Claimants

A £220 annual discount on broadband services is available to people receiving four specific Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits, yet only one in ten eligible claimants are taking advantage of the offer. Broadband social tariffs are specially designed for low-income households and those on certain benefits, but awareness remains low.

Who Qualifies for the £220 Discount?

According to Alex Tofts, broadband expert at comparison website Broadband Genie, social tariffs are available to individuals receiving Universal Credit, Jobseeker's Allowance, Housing Benefit, or Disability Living Allowance. Despite this, only 10% of those eligible are claiming the discount, meaning many are missing out on average savings of £220 per year.

Why Are So Few Claiming?

Tofts explained that there is a perception that applying for a social tariff involves complex paperwork, but the process is actually straightforward. 'To apply, you'll usually need to provide your contact details, National Insurance number, and proof of benefits. Once submitted, your provider will verify your eligibility with the DWP. This process is often quick and can sometimes be completed instantly, meaning the new tariff can come into play far sooner than you think.'

How to Apply for a Social Tariff

If your current broadband provider offers a social tariff, you can contact them directly to apply. If they do not, or if you do not meet their criteria, you may be able to switch providers without penalty. Tofts advised: 'If you explain your circumstances, your provider might let you leave your current contract without paying a penalty fee.'

Cost Savings and Benefits

Broadband social tariffs can cost as little as £12.50 per month, significantly less than standard plans. Over a 12-month period, this represents substantial savings. Tofts highlighted that 'a little effort can deliver big savings, which are all the more important at a time when fuel prices are soaring and inflation is predicted to rise.' He added that customers on social tariffs receive the same level of service as other customers, with no mid-contract price rises, and no setup or exit fees.

Call for Providers to Do More

Tofts also called on broadband providers to improve awareness of social tariffs, noting that less than half of providers mention their social tariff on their website homepage. 'The industry as a whole needs to do more,' he said.
