Birmingham Areas Top West Midlands Economic Inactivity List
Birmingham Tops West Midlands Economic Inactivity

New Office for National Statistics (ONS) data reveals that all top 10 West Midlands areas with the highest economic inactivity rates are in Birmingham, highlighting stark employment disparities across the region. The figures, recorded between March 15 and 21, 2021, measure whether people aged 16 or over were active participants in the labour market. Those counted as economically inactive did not have a job, had not looked for work, or could not start work within two weeks.

Birmingham Dominates Inactivity Rankings

The ONS interactive maps colour-coded areas to show differences in economic activity. Birmingham areas occupy every position in the top 10 for highest inactivity, while the most active areas are spread across the region, including parts of the Black Country and Solihull. The highest inactivity rate in the Black Country was recorded in Wednesbury, Walsall, at 49.7%.

What Economic Inactivity Means

According to the ONS, economic inactivity indicates whether a person was an active participant in the labour market during the reference period. The data excludes unemployed individuals who are actively seeking work, focusing instead on those not in work and not available or seeking employment.

Contrast Across the Region

While Birmingham dominates the list of least economically active areas, other parts of the West Midlands show higher activity levels. The ONS data underscores localised economic challenges and the need for targeted policy interventions to boost employment and labour market participation.
