Brits Trapped in Contracts Think They Overpay by £576 a Year
Brits Trapped in Contracts Overpay by £576 a Year

New research has revealed that British consumers trapped in contracts believe they are overpaying by an average of £576 a year. The study, conducted by comparison site Uswitch, found that many households are stuck with expensive deals for services like mobile phones, broadband, and insurance, often because they are out of contract or face penalty fees for switching.

Mobile and Broadband Contracts Worst for Overpayment

According to the research, mobile phone contracts are the most likely to leave consumers feeling overcharged, with 45% of respondents saying they think they pay too much. Broadband deals came a close second, with 42% of users expressing dissatisfaction. The study also highlighted that many consumers are unaware they can negotiate better terms or switch providers without penalty.

Loyalty Penalty Hits Hard

The findings underscore the so-called 'loyalty penalty,' where long-standing customers are charged more than new ones. Uswitch estimates that the average overpayment across all contract types is £48 per month, or £576 per year. This is particularly acute in the energy sector, where 38% of respondents said they believed they were overpaying.

Consumers Urged to Review Deals

Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at Uswitch, said: 'Many consumers are paying over the odds because they haven't reviewed their contracts in a while. With the cost of living rising, it's more important than ever to check if you're getting the best deal.' He added that switching providers or haggling with existing ones could save hundreds of pounds a year.

Impact on Household Budgets

The research comes as households face increasing financial pressure from inflation and energy bills. The overpayment of £576 a year represents a significant chunk of disposable income for many families. Consumer groups have called for more transparency from providers and easier switching processes.

How to Avoid Overpaying

Experts recommend setting a reminder to review contracts annually, especially for mobile, broadband, and insurance. Comparison websites can help identify cheaper deals, and many providers will match or beat competitor offers if customers threaten to leave. For those out of contract, switching is often straightforward and penalty-free.
