DWP Confirms Bumper Universal Credit Payments in June

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that some benefit claimants will receive significantly higher payments in June, following recent rule changes. The move comes after Labour's decision to scrap the two-child benefit cap, a policy that previously limited additional payments for families with more than two children.

Higher Payments for Larger Families

Parents claiming Universal Credit with more than two children will now receive much larger regular benefit payments. For example, families with four children will gain an extra £608 per month, with even higher amounts for those with five or six children. This change is expected to put hundreds of pounds extra into the pockets of some of the poorest families each month, making a substantial difference to their finances.

Controversial Policy Change

The scrapping of the two-child benefit cap has proven divisive, reigniting debates over welfare spending. The government argues that lifting the cap is the moral choice and will lift millions of children out of poverty following years of Conservative austerity. However, opponents claim Labour is prioritizing excessive spending on benefits, with some critics arguing that there is no guarantee the extra cash will be spent on improving children's lives and that boosting benefits may disincentivize work.

Former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair has joined the critics, warning against the policy. It is important to note that around 40% of Universal Credit claimants are employed, but many parents struggle to find stable work with sufficient pay and hours while juggling childcare responsibilities.
