Supermarkets are reportedly furious after the Treasury asked them to cap price rises on essential foods. The news was greeted with "squeals of horror," according to The Guardian. The proposed rule would affect major chains including Aldi, Lidl, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, and Sainsbury's.
Warnings of a Food Crisis
Experts warn that Britain is "sleepwalking into a food crisis" caused by extreme weather, inflation, and the impacts of the Iran war. Tim Lang, professor emeritus of food policy at City St George's, University of London, criticized the government's current strategy as "business as usual," adding that warnings are not being heeded.
"This government has received serious scientific, intelligence and policy advice that it should take significant action on food security, but it keeps signalling all is OK. It's not," Lang told The Guardian. He emphasized that volatility is the new normal, with escalating trouble from climate heating, geopolitics, and the cost of living squeeze.
National Security Issue
Richard Nugee, a retired general who also signed a letter on the issue, warned that food quantity could be reduced due to heat domes over grain baskets in Europe and around the world. He highlighted that the food chain is being damaged by war and export difficulties, while UK farmers are struggling.
Nugee expressed concern about the potential for people to become extremely stressed by not being able to afford food and taking matters into their own hands. He described the situation as a national security issue, with potential disruption to supply chains and the inability to provide sufficient food at the right price for the population.
