Waitrose has announced price reductions on 160 products as part of a £20 million cost-cutting campaign aimed at helping customers manage rising living costs. The changes take effect immediately.
Price reductions on everyday essentials
The supermarket chain is lowering prices on a range of everyday items, including fresh food, frozen products, and cupboard staples. The average saving is 12%, with some items dropping by up to 75p.
Examples include British chicken thighs, which have fallen from £3.95 to £3.20 per kilo, and a six-pack of free-range white eggs, now £1.30 instead of £1.50. Unsalted butter is reduced by 25p to £2.00, and chopped tomatoes now cost 55p per tin.
Focus on affordable range
Over half of the reductions apply to the Waitrose Essentials range, which already offers budget-friendly options. Nathan Ansell, Waitrose chief customer officer, said: "Customers are watching what they spend, but they don't want to compromise on the food they buy. We know our customers – the Food Lovers who shop with us – want to feel confident in the food they buy, without compromising on what matters to them."
Aldi also cuts prices
This follows Aldi's announcement of price reductions on over 200 items for the summer, spanning fresh and frozen food, cupboard staples, and household essentials. Aldi has invested over £200 million this year in keeping prices low, including £60 million in reductions introduced this week. Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: "Now more than ever, we know that customers are looking to manage their budgets for the weekly shop, which is why we're constantly reviewing prices across our range. These latest price reductions cover hundreds of everyday products and offer great value without compromising on quality."
