New Black Country-Style Pub The Cloak and Dagger Opens in Birmingham
Black Country-Style Pub The Cloak and Dagger Opens in Birmingham

A modern taproom in Stirchley has been completely transformed into a traditional Black Country-style pub, with its official opening set for this weekend. The Cloak and Dagger will occupy the space previously used by The Wildcat Tap on Pershore Road, bringing a nostalgic touch to the local scene.

Inspired by BBC Doctors

The pub's name draws inspiration from a fictional pub featured in the BBC daytime drama Doctors, which was filmed in Birmingham. A prop sign from the show now sits proudly in the window, adding a unique and quirky element to the venue's decor.

According to the pub's statement, a regular at the nearby Cork and Cage, who worked in set design for the BBC, entrusted them with the sign years ago. This connection has now come full circle with the opening of The Cloak and Dagger.

Classic Pub Features and Offerings

The interior of The Cloak and Dagger boasts classic pub-style carpeting, vintage upholstery on furniture, and wall decorations that pay homage to historic breweries. The focus is on championing traditional beers such as best bitter, old ales, and classic stouts.

Food-wise, the pub will specialise in Black Country-style cobs, with plans to serve them extensively during its initial operations. This simple yet hearty offering aligns with the pub's old-school vibe.

Ownership and Hours

The Cloak and Dagger is the creation of the team behind Cork and Cage, a community-owned and run micropub located just a few doors down. Cork and Cage has earned a strong reputation for its quality and is operated by all of its bar staff.

For its opening weekend, The Cloak and Dagger will be open from 5pm to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 12pm to 10pm on Sunday. The pub is situated at 1381-1383 Pershore Road, Stirchley, B30 2JR.

Expanding the Local Pub Scene

This new addition to Stirchley's hospitality landscape aims to provide a cozy, traditional pub experience with a modern twist. By blending elements like the BBC Easter egg with classic Black Country charm, The Cloak and Dagger hopes to attract both locals and visitors looking for authentic pub culture.

The transformation from The Wildcat Tap to The Cloak and Dagger marks a significant shift towards celebrating regional heritage, while also supporting the community-driven ethos established by Cork and Cage.
