Foreign Office Issues 'Do Not Travel' Advisories for Seven European Nations

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued critical travel warnings for seven countries in Europe, advising against all travel or travel to specific regions due to heightened security risks and ongoing conflicts. These advisories are aimed at holidaymakers and travellers planning trips to these destinations.

Countries with Full Travel Bans

The FCDO advises against all travel to two nations in Europe:

  • Belarus: The FCDO strongly advises against all travel to Belarus. British nationals face a significant risk of arrest, particularly if they have engaged in activities deemed illegal by the Belarusian regime. Additionally, there is a low but present risk that conflict from the war in Ukraine could spread to Belarus.
  • Russia: Due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the FCDO advises against all travel to Russia. Risks include security incidents such as drone attacks, Russian air defence activity, limited flight availability for returning to the UK, and restricted UK government support. There is also an increased risk of detention for British nationals, especially if suspected of activities against Russian law, even if conducted outside Russia.

Countries with Partial Travel Restrictions

The FCDO advises against all travel to specific parts of five other countries:

  • Armenia: Avoid travel within 5km of the full eastern border with Azerbaijan, including the M16/H26 road between the towns of Ijevan and Noyemberyan.
  • Azerbaijan: Avoid travel within 5km of the Azerbaijan-Armenia border.
  • Georgia: Do not travel to the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
  • Moldova: Avoid travel to the region of Transnistria.
  • Ukraine: The FCDO advises against all travel to Ukraine, with the exception of some western areas.

These warnings highlight the FCDO's commitment to ensuring the safety of British travellers abroad. Out of 226 countries or territories with foreign travel advice pages, these seven in Europe are currently flagged as having no-go zones due to various geopolitical and security concerns.
