UK Foreign Office Updates Travel Guidance for Kuwait Amid Security Concerns
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a significant update to its travel advice for Kuwait, urging British tourists and nationals to exercise extreme caution and register their presence in the country. This revision comes as the ongoing crisis in the Middle East escalates, with specific warnings about potential terrorist attacks targeting public spaces.
Heightened Terrorism Risks and Essential Travel Advisory
In a statement released on Friday, March 6, 2026, the FCDO explicitly advised against all but essential travel to Kuwait. The updated guidance highlights that terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks within the country, particularly in the context of regional tensions. The FCDO emphasized the threat from Iraq-based Iranian-aligned militia groups, which have reportedly threatened to target US military bases across the region, noting Kuwait's significant US military presence.
Potential targets include residential compounds, restaurants, hotels, beaches, shopping centres, mosques, and military, oil, transport, and aviation interests. The FCDO urged British citizens to stay vigilant, remain aware of their surroundings, keep up with local media reports, and follow advice from local authorities.
Registration and Safety Recommendations for Travelers
The FCDO strongly recommends that all British nationals in Kuwait register their presence with the UK government to receive timely updates and assistance. This step is crucial for ensuring communication during emergencies or security incidents. Travelers are advised to exercise caution in public areas and avoid locations that might be at higher risk.
Recent Incidents and Historical Context
The FCDO provided examples of recent security incidents to underscore the seriousness of the threat. In 2020, six minors were arrested in Kuwait on suspicion of links with ISIS. More recently, in 2024, three individuals were arrested over an alleged ISIS plot against a place of worship. Additionally, the FCDO cited ongoing Red Sea military activity as a contributing factor to the heightened security concerns in the region.
This updated travel advice reflects the FCDO's commitment to protecting British citizens abroad by providing clear, actionable information in response to evolving global security challenges.
