New Harborne Irish Pub Clancy's Set to Open with Affordable Guinness and Pies
Matthew Clifford is just days away from opening his first-ever pub, Clancy's, an Irish bar located on Harborne High Street in Birmingham. The venue, which replaces the former Wingers Tap Room, is already generating significant buzz among locals, with many eagerly anticipating its debut.
Interestingly, Matthew only began drinking Guinness in November, but after enjoying a pint in Northern Ireland, he is now committed to serving what he hopes will be among the best pints of the iconic stout in Birmingham. He named the pub Clancy's as a heartfelt nod to a friend's son, adding a personal touch to the establishment.
From Construction to Hospitality
Matthew, who also runs the construction company Brickscape, took a hands-on approach to building his pub. Since starting the project last October, he has been involved in installing bathrooms and a cellar, leveraging his construction expertise to bring his vision to life.
He explained, "With plumbing and electric already in-place, this was a small enough venue to start off. But I've got aspirations for multiple locations." Matthew emphasized that there is nothing quite like Clancy's on this side of the city, positioning it as an independent Irish bar with a focus on affordability and community spirit.
Affordable Drinks and Community Focus
One of Clancy's key selling points will be its affordable pricing. Matthew stated, "We won't charge you £6 for a Guinness, we'll charge you £4.50." This commitment to reasonable prices is part of his broader goal to create a welcoming community hub.
The pub will not only offer drinks but also feature pies supplied by bakery Rourke's, including options like Guinness and ale pies, with delivery available from the pub to customers' doorsteps. Beyond the food and drink, Clancy's plans to host live entertainment on weekends and cater to groups like golf societies, reflecting Matthew's own experiences and priorities as a landlord.
Anticipation Builds in Harborne
The excitement surrounding Clancy's is palpable. Matthew noted, "People are coming up our alleyway daily to ask when we will open, it's the talk of the town." Having frequented Harborne pubs for years, he expects many of the first regulars to be family and friends, which he believes will help foster a strong community atmosphere.
While the exact opening date remains unspecified, Matthew confirmed that Clancy's will certainly be open before St Patrick's Day. The pub is located at 152 High Street, Harborne, B17 9PN, and aims to become a staple in the local social scene with its blend of Irish charm, affordable offerings, and community-centric ethos.
