UK Foreign Office Issues Updated Travel Warnings for Lebanon and Saudi Arabia
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has significantly updated its travel guidance, adding two more countries to its "do not travel" advisory list. In a move affecting UK nationals planning trips to the Middle East, the FCDO now advises against all travel to Lebanon and specific regions within Saudi Arabia.
Detailed Advisory for Saudi Arabia
For Saudi Arabia, the FCDO has issued a tiered warning system based on proximity to conflict zones. The office advises against all travel to areas within 10 kilometers of the border with Yemen. Additionally, it recommends against all but essential travel to regions between 10km and 80km from the Yemeni border, as well as to Eastern Province and Riyadh Province, unless absolutely necessary.
Comprehensive Restrictions for Lebanon
The travel advisory for Lebanon is extensive and covers multiple governorates and specific urban areas. In Beirut, the FCDO advises against all travel to numerous districts, including but not limited to:
- Tariq el Jdideh and areas south of Saeb Salam street
- Ghobeiry and regions north of it but south of Yarmouk street
- Chiyah, Haret Hraik, Burj Al Barajneh, and other western areas
- Bir Hassan, excluding a specific block containing key institutions
Furthermore, the FCDO advises against all travel to South Governorate, Nabatiyeh Governorate, Beqaa Governorate, and Baalbek-Hermel Governorate. For Mount Lebanon Governorate, travel is advised against south of a specified road, and only essential travel is recommended for the rest of Beirut and Mount Lebanon.
Additional Regional Warnings
The advisory extends to northern Lebanon, where all travel is advised against for Tripoli and parts of Northern Governorate north of a designated road. Essential travel only is advised for the remainder of Northern Governorate, with all travel advised against for Akkar Governorate.
These updates reflect heightened security concerns and aim to protect UK nationals from potential risks in these regions. Travelers are urged to consult the FCDO website for the latest information before making any plans.
