First University-Owned Wetherspoons Pub Set for May Opening at University of Surrey
A groundbreaking new Wetherspoons pub is coming to the UK, with the University of Surrey set to open the first university-owned franchise of the pub giant in May. This innovative move marks a significant shift in how Wetherspoons operates on campus sites across the country.
Details of the New Campus Venue
The pub, named The Sir Ronald Wates, will be located at the University of Surrey's Stag Hill site inside the revamped Wates House building. The building closed in December for a major refurbishment to prepare for this new venture. It will be open to students, staff, visitors, and the local community, complementing existing campus food outlets such as Hillside Food Court and The Hideout.
University Leadership and Wetherspoons Collaboration
Will Davies, Chief Operating Officer at the University of Surrey, explained the decision, stating that the university aimed to provide a pub-style venue offering genuine value for money and quality. He highlighted that Wetherspoon's model allows for affordable options, such as a full breakfast for under five pounds, leveraging the chain's pricing power and supply chain efficiency.
John Huston, Wetherspoons chief executive, expressed delight at the new pub opening, expressing confidence that it will prove popular with students and the public alike, enhancing the university's offerings.
Historical Significance and Operational Plans
The pub's name honors Sir Ronald Wates, whose family funded the original building. The Wates family granted permission for the pub to carry his name, continuing their long-standing association with the university. Staff from the previous Wates House bar have been retained and will receive full training on Wetherspoon's operational procedures ahead of the opening, ensuring a smooth transition.
This initiative represents a unique partnership in the UK hospitality sector, blending academic community needs with a well-known pub brand's expertise.
