Marks & Spencer Announces Blackburn Town Centre Store Closure Amid Delays

Marks & Spencer has confirmed that the closure of its Blackburn town centre store is likely to occur before the opening of its planned new £10 million Food Hall. This decision follows objections that have delayed the high-street retailer's relocation plans, potentially leading to the store shutting its doors within weeks.

Objections from Tesco and Council Hinder Relocation

Tesco and Blackburn with Darwen Council have raised objections to M&S's proposal to move from the town centre to Frontier Park, located over the border in Hyndburn borough. These objections have disrupted the timeline, forcing M&S to reconsider its operations in Blackburn.

Zeba Khan, regional manager at M&S, explained the situation, stating, "As we reshape for growth, our UK-wide store rotation programme aims to ensure each store delivers the best of M&S and an optimal shopping experience. In 2023, we planned to open a new food store at Frontier Park to coincide with the end of our lease at King William Street. Sadly, following objections, that has not been possible, leading us to propose the closure of our Blackburn store."

Impact on Shoppers and Staff

Shoppers in Blackburn may face a gap in access to M&S products, including popular items like Percy Pig sweets, as the King William Street site closes long before the new Food Hall can open. The closure reflects changing shopping habits, with Khan noting that the store lacks a sustainable future.

M&S has prioritized discussions with its employees affected by the closure. Khan added, "Our priority is continuing conversations with our colleagues, and if the proposals proceed, we will offer alternative roles at M&S wherever possible. We thank all customers for their support over the years."

Council Expresses Disappointment

Councillor Phil Riley, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, expressed disappointment over the decision. He said, "We are very disappointed to learn of M&S's decision to close its Blackburn town centre store before a new store opens. Our immediate thoughts are with the staff informed yesterday, as this is an uncertain and worrying time for them and their families."

Riley acknowledged that M&S is exiting many town centres nationwide, not just Blackburn, but emphasized the store's historical significance. "M&S has been part of Blackburn's high street for generations and has long been an important anchor for the town centre," he stated.

The closure highlights broader challenges facing retail in town centres, with businesses adapting to evolving consumer behaviors and logistical hurdles. As M&S moves forward, the focus remains on supporting staff and navigating the transition, while the community awaits further developments on the new Food Hall project.
