Ford Fiesta Named UK's Most Fuel-Efficient Used Car
In a surprising turn, the Ford Fiesta has been declared the most fuel-efficient used car in the United Kingdom, surpassing competitors like BMW, Suzuki, and Mini. Specifically, models produced between 2008 and 2017 have achieved an impressive 76.3 miles per gallon (mpg), securing the top spot in recent rankings.
Expert Insights on the Fiesta's Success
Automotive experts from Cazoo praised the Ford Fiesta, highlighting its widespread popularity and practical benefits. They noted, "One of the most-loved cars in the UK, the little Fiesta has proven the right fit for countless owners across the nation. There's good reason for that, too, as it's good to drive, pleasant to look at, and practical inside. Most importantly, it's great on fuel."
While diesel versions offer the best fuel efficiency, the standard petrol models are also highly economical, typically returning around 50mpg, making them a frugal choice for many drivers.
Top Contenders in Fuel Efficiency
Following the Ford Fiesta, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2014-2022) claimed second place with approximately 74.3mpg. Cazoo emphasized that the diesel-powered 216d variant delivers this efficiency and qualifies for zero road tax, offering a cost-effective advantage.
In joint third place, the Suzuki Swift (2010-2017) and the MINI hatchback (2006-2013) both achieved 72mpg, showcasing strong performance among compact city cars.
Rising Fuel Prices Add Urgency
Amid this news, the RAC's head of external affairs, Simon Williams, warned of increasing fuel costs. He explained that forecourt prices are already climbing due to oil trading near $70 (£52) a barrel in recent weeks.
"Petrol rose by a penny a litre in February and is likely to go up by another penny in the next week or so to an average of 134p a litre," said Williams. He further projected that if oil prices reach $80 a barrel, petrol could average 136p per litre, with potential hikes to over 140p at $90 and nearing 150p at $100, though these scenarios remain uncertain.
This development underscores the growing importance of fuel efficiency for UK drivers, as economic factors continue to influence motoring choices and expenses.
