Aldi Announces Major Expansion of Food Donation Initiative for 2026
Aldi, the discount supermarket chain, has unveiled ambitious plans to provide one million meals to families in need throughout 2026. This significant initiative represents a substantial increase from the previous year's efforts and underscores the company's commitment to community support and sustainability.
Building on a Successful Pilot Program
The expansion follows a highly successful pilot program conducted in 2025, which resulted in the donation of 455,000 meals. This pilot was implemented at three of Aldi's Regional Distribution Centres in partnership with The Bread and Butter Thing, a leading UK food redistribution charity. Encouraged by this outcome, Aldi is now rolling out the program across all its remaining Regional Distribution Centres nationwide.
The partnership enables Aldi's suppliers to donate products that are still perfectly good to eat but cannot be sold in stores due to minor issues such as packaging damage or labelling errors. This approach not only helps reduce food waste but also ensures that nutritious food reaches those who need it most.
Strengthening Community Support Through Charity Collaboration
The Bread and Butter Thing is the UK's largest member-based food redistribution charity, operating mobile food clubs in communities from Maidstone to Northumberland. These clubs provide members with access to fresh, nutritious food at affordable prices, addressing food insecurity in various regions.
Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, commented on the initiative's importance: "Expanding this initiative across all of our Regional Distribution Centres marks an important step in how we reduce waste and continue to support our communities. Through our partnership with The Bread and Butter Thing, we're ensuring that even more surplus food is redirected to families who need it most, rather than going to waste."
Addressing High Demand for Affordable Food
Vic Harper, CEO at The Bread and Butter Thing, highlighted the ongoing need for such programs: "Demand for fresh, affordable food support remains high in many communities, and this partnership plays an important role in helping us meet that need. Surplus food that might otherwise go to waste is instead helping families stretch their budgets and access nutritious essentials. We're pleased to be working with Aldi to grow this impact across more communities."
This expanded initiative is expected to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many families across the UK, providing essential support during challenging economic times. By leveraging its supply chain and charitable partnerships, Aldi aims to contribute positively to both environmental sustainability and social welfare.
