The family of a Birmingham man with just a 30 per cent chance of survival if kept on expensive life support after a severe injury abroad is urgently appealing for help to keep him alive.
Critical Condition in Thailand
Ethan Lacey, 20, was travelling in Thailand and visiting his cousin when his family lost contact with him on May 15. After several days of uncertainty, relatives traced him to a hospital ICU, where doctors revealed he had been critically injured in a fall.
According to a local news report, Ethan, from Castle Vale, suffered critical head injuries after falling from a moving pickup truck at a busy Pattaya intersection. He was then reportedly run over by the vehicle's rear wheel. The driver allegedly fled the scene without stopping to help.
Family's Desperate Plea
Ethan's grandmother, Anthea Chatwin, launched an urgent GoFundMe appeal, pleading for public help to keep her grandson alive as the family faces mounting medical costs and a race against time. Writing on the fundraising page, she said Ethan's travel insurance had unfortunately run out.
She stated: "Ethan has a 30% chance of survival if kept on life support for two weeks. Doctors are saying it’s going to cost us £800-£1,000 a day to keep him in that hospital. We really need help and support from everyone who can."
So far, the family has raised just over £2,100. In an earlier update, Anthea described how they finally traced him: "We located Ethan at 5am on May 19, British time, via a girl he is seeing in Thailand. He is in ICU. Unfortunately, his travel insurance has run out. It would be greatly appreciated if people can help with donations to get him home where he belongs. Myself, his mother and father are currently on the way over. Any help will be appreciated."
