The family of a man killed at a Birmingham nightclub has revealed he was a devoted church deacon. Berhane Tsegay, aged 33, suffered catastrophic head injuries after being pushed down a steep flight of stairs at Sebene Habesha in Newtown on September 26, 2025. He died in hospital three days later.
Family tribute
In a statement issued through West Midlands Police, his family described him as 'kind, loving, gentle and humble'. They said: 'Words cannot fully describe the depth of our loss and the pain we continue to endure. Berhane was a person of strong integrity, always honest, respectful, and true to his values. He worked hard and was determined to build a stable future for himself and to support his family.'
Faith and service
His faith was central to his life. He served as a Deacon both in Eritrea and the United Kingdom, respected by peers, teachers, and clergy for his devotion. The family added: 'He brought warmth, laughter, and support to those around him. He lived according to his faith and values, and his absence is felt every day.'
Court case
Simon Gebrengus, 44, of Anderson Road, Erdington, was jailed for six years at Birmingham Crown Court on May 5 after pleading guilty to manslaughter. A jury cleared him of murder. Bibi Gilzgi, 31, of no fixed address, also admitted manslaughter, but the jury could not reach a verdict on murder, and he will face a retrial next year.
Incident details
Mr Tsegay had been intoxicated at the nightclub and involved in confrontations with both defendants. Gilzgi struck him with a shisha pipe before Gebrengus shoved him to the floor and stamped on his head. All three men headed for the exit at the bottom of a flight of steps. CCTV showed Gilzgi throwing Mr Tsegay down the stairs while Gebrengus pushed him, causing him to tumble and land on his head.
Detective Sergeant Robert Moir, who led the investigation, said: 'Gebrengus’s initial account was inconsistent with our enquiries. It became clear he was involved in Berhane’s death, and our team worked hard to bring him to justice.'
