Tony Brown, a resident of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, has raised an impressive £1,050 for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity through a heartfelt darts tournament. This initiative was his way of expressing gratitude to the hospital staff who provided exceptional care for his wife, Sonya, after she was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2024.
Honouring Sonya's Memory
Sonya received treatment at Lincoln County Hospital, where she was looked after by the dedicated teams in the Medical Emergency Assessment Unit and Waddington Ward. Tragically, she passed away five months later, but Tony was determined to give back in her memory.
Community Support at Hill Top Social Club
The darts tournament was held at the Hill Top Social and Recreational Club in Gainsborough, and Tony was deeply moved by the overwhelming support from the local community. Local businesses and organisations generously donated prizes, which helped boost the fundraising efforts significantly.
Tony shared his motivation: “Everyone was fantastic. They gave Sonya so much time during her visits, and the support they gave to both of us was amazing. This was my way of giving something back.”
Impact on Patient Care
The funds raised will directly benefit other lung cancer patients, providing vital resources that go beyond standard NHS budgets. Sarah Civello, the lead MacMillan lung cancer clinical nurse specialist who cared for Sonya, praised the initiative.
Sarah Civello commented: “She was truly a remarkable lady, and it is a privilege to care for patients and families like the Browns. This generous donation will help us provide those special touches that go beyond what NHS budgets can cover.”
Official Recognition and Future Benefits
Tony recently presented the cheque to Kathryn Helley, the group chief clinical governance officer at Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group, alongside members of the medical team who supported Sonya. Connor Hill, a fundraiser for United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity, highlighted the importance of such contributions.
Connor Hill added: “This generosity is greatly appreciated and will help improve care for patients and families across Lincolnshire hospitals.”
The event not only honoured Sonya’s legacy but also strengthened community bonds, demonstrating how collective efforts can make a real difference in healthcare support.
