Staff from Hungerford-based developer David Wilson Homes Southern volunteered at Home-Start West Berkshire’s Baby Bank project in Newbury, providing essential support to families in need. The Baby Bank supplies vital items such as nappies, clothing, cots, buggies and safety equipment to families facing financial hardship.

Volunteer team sorts donations for distribution

A team of eight volunteers from the developer—Jeannette Cheeseman, Sam Vowles, Charles Clayforth-Carr, Paula Taylor, Alison Weight, Richard Bennett, Adèle Kelly and Linda Guntrip—dedicated a day to carefully sorting and organising clothing donations into separate categories. These items are then distributed to families across the district who need them most.

Lapwing Green development and local support

The housebuilder’s Lapwing Green development in Speen is located nearby. Home-Start West Berkshire supports families with young children through challenging times, working with parents in their own homes to offer confidential, non-judgemental support and practical help. The organisation aims to build confidence, strengthen relationships and improve wellbeing. Trained volunteers assist families experiencing isolation, mental health difficulties, bereavement, illness or other pressures, helping to give children the best possible start in life.

Rising demand for Baby Bank services

Grace Green, Director at Home-Start West Berkshire, said: “We are seeing an increasing number of families struggling to make ends meet, with no clear end in sight. Many are being forced to make impossible decisions around food, bills and providing for their children. The Baby Bank is experiencing an unprecedented rise in demand, and keeping on top of donations is critical to the smooth running of the service. We are grateful to the David Wilson Homes team for helping us stay organised – it makes such a difference to the number of families we can support.”
