A team of self-described 'questionable runners' is preparing to take on one of the UK's toughest obstacle events this June, all in support of a Derby-based charity helping children facing serious illness.
The group will tackle the Wolf Run 10K at Stanford Hall in Leicestershire on June 14, joining thousands of participants at the popular Summer Wolf event. They are fundraising for Over The Wall, a Derby-based charity that provides free, life-changing experiences for children and young people living with serious illnesses and disabilities, as well as support for their families.
More than one in 10 children in the UK miss out on a carefree childhood due to serious illness. Over The Wall helps to change that by creating a world of mischief, magic and adventure, offering both residential and online programmes where children can rediscover fun, confidence and a sense of possibility.
The team has set itself a fundraising target of £250 per person, as they prepare to face a demanding course of mud, water and obstacles. Describing themselves as a mixed-ability group, the runners admit they are far from seasoned athletes.
Cristian Thompson said: 'We're a mixed-ability group – and to be honest, a few of us are a bit broken and not exactly built for running – but that's exactly why we're doing it. Between us we've got dodgy knees, questionable fitness levels and very little running experience – but plenty of determination. We're ready to drag – and probably carry – each other over the finish line.'
While the challenge will test both physical and mental resilience, the team says it's nothing compared to the daily challenges faced by the children the charity supports. They are now calling on supporters to help them reach their fundraising target and support Over The Wall's work with families across the UK.

Many other runners, charities and corporate teams across the country are teaming up for Wolf Run's next edition, Summer Wolf, which takes place in Stanford Hall estate, Leicestershire, from June 13–14. The event also promises a lively, festival-style atmosphere, with music, food and activities for both runners and spectators.
Charlie Moreton, founder at The Wolf Run, said: 'Summer Wolf is always a brilliant weekend. It's about getting stuck in, having a laugh and challenging yourself, whether you're coming on your own or as part of a group. We see a real mix of people taking part and coming along. It's as much about the day out as it is the course itself.'
5k and 10k entries remain for Summer Wolf, with Junior Wolf very close to sell-out. Visit www.thewolfrun.com for more information.
