Television auctioneer Richard Winterton is embarking on a monumental personal challenge to mark a new decade, pledging to run the 2026 London Marathon in support of two causes deeply personal to him and his community.
A Personal Mission for Vital Causes
The father-of-four from Lichfield, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday, will take on the legendary 26.2-mile course through the capital on April 26, 2026. He aims to split all funds raised equally between Parkinson’s UK and the local We Love Lichfield fund.
"After recently turning 60, I wanted to do something special," Richard explained. His motivation is profoundly personal. "My own father, Tony, is currently living with Parkinson’s and my father-in-law, Roy, sadly passed away three years ago after living with the condition for 10 years."
He chose We Love Lichfield for the incredible support it provides to charities, groups, and projects across Lichfield, Burntwood, and the surrounding area.
The Charities Set to Benefit
The funds raised for Parkinson's UK will contribute to the charity's vital work supporting thousands of affected families across the UK, funding research, and campaigning for better treatments and a cure.
We Love Lichfield, a place-based fund of The Community Foundation for Staffordshire & Shropshire, has a remarkable track record. Since its inception over a decade ago, it has distributed £462,000 across 500 awards, benefiting 237 recipients within Lichfield District. Donations are invested in an endowment, ensuring returns support local community and voluntary groups sustainably.
Training with Purpose
Preparing for one of the world's most famous road races is no small feat, but Richard is driven by his mission. "Training for a marathon is a big challenge, but knowing I’m running for two such important causes will keep me motivated every step of the way," he added.
He is calling on the public for support, emphasising that every contribution counts. "Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a real difference and is hugely appreciated. I’d like to thank everyone for their encouragement, support, and generosity—it truly means more to me than I can say."

A familiar face on TV screens from Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip to Coronation Street, he recently hosted the inaugural St Giles Hospice Winter Gala and conducted the auction for Cohort 4, a Queen’s Award-winning women's peer support group.
The TCS London Marathon, which he will join, is a global spectacle attracting over 50,000 participants each year, from elite athletes to amateur runners, all uniting in a unique test of endurance and fundraising.
