A determined family from St Ives in Cornwall took on a significant physical challenge for a noble cause on Sunday, March 8. Derwyn Hardwick, aged 55, ran the Cambridge Half Marathon alongside his sons Scott and Sam to raise funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, which is the oldest charity associated with the Royal Air Force.
A Personal Goal Achieved Together
Derwyn, who underwent a second hip replacement surgery just last May, set himself an ambitious personal objective: to complete a half-marathon with both of his sons. "Our only goal was to finish together," he explained. "We stuck together and completed the race in under 2 hours 20 minutes." This achievement highlights their teamwork and dedication, especially considering Derwyn's recent medical procedure.
Supporting the RAF Community
The inspiration to support the RAF Benevolent Fund came from Sam, who joined the Royal Air Force in November 2024. The Fund plays a crucial role in providing essential support to:
- Serving personnel and veterans
- Their families
Its services include financial grants, welfare breaks, mental health support, and youth programmes, making it a vital resource for the RAF community.
Inspiring Others and Raising Funds
The Hardwick family hopes that their run will motivate others to take on challenges for charitable causes. To facilitate donations, they have established a JustGiving page, allowing supporters to contribute easily to their fundraising efforts for the RAF Benevolent Fund.
This event not only showcases the family's commitment to fitness and philanthropy but also underscores the importance of community support for military charities. Their story serves as an inspiring example of how personal goals can align with broader charitable initiatives, benefiting those in need.
