Stoke-on-Trent Man Tackles 54-Mile Charity Walk for Muscular Dystrophy UK
A dedicated fundraiser from Stoke-on-Trent is preparing for an extraordinary two-day, 54-mile challenge to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Paul Parsons, a 46-year-old resident of Dresden, Stoke-on-Trent, is undertaking this epic journey to support the leading charity for over 110,000 children and adults in the UK affected by more than 60 muscle-wasting and weakening conditions.
Inspired by a Personal Connection
Paul was motivated to take on this demanding challenge by his friend's eight-year-old daughter, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2020. This personal connection has driven him to push his limits and raise awareness for a cause close to his heart.
The challenge will begin at 6am tomorrow (Thursday, February 26) from Stoke City Football Club, with Paul aiming to reach Coventry City Football Club by 5pm the following day. After covering the equivalent of two marathons, he will attend the match between the two teams on Saturday, February 28.
A History of Endurance and Commitment
Paul is no stranger to long-distance feats. Last year, he successfully completed a 38-mile walking challenge from Stoke City to West Bromwich Albion in just 10 and a half hours, shortly before running the London Marathon for the same charity. This year, he is determined to go "bigger and better" with his efforts.
In addition to this walk, Paul has already committed to running the TCS London Marathon 2026 for Muscular Dystrophy UK on Sunday, April 26, showcasing his ongoing dedication to the cause.
Overcoming Challenges and Pushing Limits
Paul initially planned to complete the full 54 miles in a single day but adjusted his strategy after consulting with a running coach. "Originally, I planned on attempting the full 54 miles in one day. After taking advice from a running coach, I’ve opted to break it down over the two days," he explained.
He added, "The recovery from completing 54 miles straight could’ve hampered my marathon training, so I’ve decided on the slightly more sensible option. Many people would say I’m nuts for even attempting it in the timeframe I’ve allowed myself."
Despite feeling nervous, Paul finds motivation in the purpose behind his efforts. "I’m not going to lie, the challenge I’ve set myself is my biggest and hardest to date. I’m slightly nervous. But the fact I’m doing it to raise funds and awareness of a charity that means so much to me makes it all worthwhile," he said.
A Journey of Transformation and Purpose
Paul began his running journey in 2018, starting with a couch to 5k program to improve his fitness. "Being overweight myself, I always wanted to improve my fitness, so I took up a couch to 5k program and really enjoyed it. I gradually started running more and this helped me both physically and mentally," he shared.
His decision to support Muscular Dystrophy UK stems from a deep emotional connection. "I chose to support Muscular Dystrophy UK, a charity close to my heart, as my friend’s young daughter lives with a muscle wasting condition and now is wheelchair bound. It touched my heartstrings and I wanted to do something to raise awareness," Paul explained.
Since applying for a London Marathon place last year, Paul has been committed to pushing his boundaries. "I applied for a London Marathon place last year and there’s been no looking back since. I’m pushing myself beyond limits and it fills me with pride that I’m doing it for such a special cause," he concluded.
