Sunshine Fund Hosts Pizza Social for Parents and Carers with Lottery Grant

The Sunshine Fund has hosted a special pizza-making social event for parents and carers of children with disabilities, made possible by funding from The National Lottery Community Fund's Awards for All initiative. The event took place at Sorella Sorella in Gateshead, providing a relaxed lunchtime environment where participants could create and enjoy their own pizzas.

Building Strong Community Connections

The purpose of the National Lottery grant is to bring people together to build strong relationships and improve communities, which the Sunshine Fund event successfully achieved. Parents and carers were able to relax without their children for a couple of hours, meeting new people and socializing with like-minded individuals in a pressure-free setting.

One parent commented, "It was lovely to meet parents in the same boat as myself, and talking about same experiences so I didn't feel as isolated." Another participant said, "Fantastic to meet other people in similar situations and let off some steam."

Addressing Isolation and Shared Experiences

The event facilitated new conversations and brought people together, with some sharing experiences about caring for children with additional needs. Others appreciated the opportunity to take a break from their caregiving roles. The Sunshine Fund understands the day-to-day stresses families face and the isolation that can occur without a supportive community.

The organization funds specialist equipment for children with disabilities and complex needs that families cannot access through the NHS. This social event was designed to complement that practical support with emotional and community connections.

Historical Connections and Centenary Celebrations

In related news, the Sunshine Fund is preparing for its 100th anniversary in 2028 and has been exploring its rich history. This includes discovering connections to comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, who visited the North East in 1932 as part of their UK tour.

The slapstick pair participated in a charity event at Tynemouth Plaza where they handed out donated gifts to children, facilitated by what was then called The Fresh Air Fund (now The Sunshine Fund). Amateur newsreel footage of this visit has been published by the Yorkshire Film Archive.

The Sunshine Fund is encouraging anyone with historical connections to the organization to come forward as they continue researching their 98-year history of supporting the region.

Future Initiatives and Community Involvement

The organization continues to seek community support for its current initiatives in 2026, including providing specialist equipment for disabled children. They have also announced new events including taking over the Ponteland Duck Race for 2026 and introducing "The Sunshine Mile" as an addition to their popular Sunshine Run 5K.

The Sunshine Fund expressed gratitude to The National Lottery for enabling these community events and thanked the team at Sorella Sorella for their hospitality during the pizza social.
