Wem Rotary Club gets £3,000 Persimmon Homes grant

A Shropshire charity dedicated to supporting local residents has received a significant financial boost to help fund its vital work in the coming year.

Vital Funding for Community Projects

Wem and District Rotary Club has been awarded a grant of £3,000 from Persimmon Homes West Midlands. The donation comes through the national housebuilder's Community Champions initiative, which supports local good causes.

The funds will enable the Rotary Club to continue and expand its wide range of community-focused activities. These initiatives are crucial for supporting isolated individuals and fostering community spirit in the Wem area.

How the Grant Will Be Spent

The generous donation will directly benefit local people in several key ways. The club is renowned for providing free Christmas Day lunches for those who would otherwise be alone, a service that brings comfort and companionship during the festive season.

Furthermore, the money will help fund popular summer canal boat trips, offering enjoyable outings for residents. The grant will also support various community events and youth activities organised by the club throughout the year across the town.

Official Handover and Reactions

The cheque was formally presented at a special gathering. The event was attended by the Mayor of Wem, Persimmon Homes West Midlands Managing Director Joe Turner, Rotary Club President Roger Ashton, and local ward councillor Alan Holford.

Wem Town Mayor, Cllr David Parry, expressed his delight at the support. "The Rotary Club of Wem and District does so much for the Town and surrounding areas," he said. "As Town Mayor I was delighted to see it receiving such generous support from Persimmon. The monies donated will enable the hard-working members of Wem Rotary to do even more for local people."

Roger Ashton, President of Wem and District Rotary Club, thanked the housebuilder. "Our community spirited Club would like to thank Persimmon Homes for their generous support through their Community Champions Programme," he stated. "We pride ourselves on helping local charities and good causes in Wem and the surrounding area. This grant will help us to extend our services."

Joe Turner of Persimmon Homes highlighted the club's importance. "Wem and District Rotary Club plays a vital role in the community, offering help and companionship to those who need it," he commented. "We’re pleased to support their efforts through our Community Champions initiative and hope this donation helps them continue their excellent work across the town."

Councillor Alan Holford also praised the donation, noting it was great to speak to club members about their projects. "This kind donation from Persimmon Homes will really benefit the community," he concluded.
